(What the hell is \u2018low-value pool deductions\u2019 anyway? My kiddos\u2019 splash pool? My inground pool that\u2019s nowhere near as expensive as the neighbour\u2019s infinity pool?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s the stress of getting it lodged in time, probably because you avoided doing your accounting all year long and, <em>Holy Spiky Massage Balls, Batman! It\u2019s July already!<\/em> And the looming dread of that &#8220;love letter&#8221; from the tax man that\u2019s going to decimate your bank accounts if you haven\u2019t been setting aside money each month to cover your tax bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this is where your mind goes, I\u2019ve got a surprise for you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote has-text-align-left is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Accounting is not tax<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Accounting is not tax<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Tax is just a form you fill out to let the grubbyment know how much of your hard-earned money it can get its grubby mitts on this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, you have to <em>do<\/em> some accounting in order to be able to fill out that tax return. But they are not the same thing. Not even close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of tax returns as the invoice you issue a client at the end of a treatment. It must be done but, beyond perhaps helping the client get a bit of coin back from their health fund if you don\u2019t have a HICAPS machine, is it of any real use? If you\u2019re audited by the ATO \u2013 sure \u2013 but of use to you in running your business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong>Accounting, on the other hand, is more like your business&#8217;s financial equivalent of a personal massage therapist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the regular, loving attention that loosens the knots, eases the tension, and keeps everything running smoothly, so your business stays flexible, healthy, and strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;re doing for yourself (the business owner) what you lovingly do for your clients. Even those clients you don\u2019t particularly like &#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why doing your accounting is a game changer<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you do your accounting yourself, you stop flying blind in business. You get to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Feel the pulse of your business in real time.<\/strong> You\u2019ll know exactly how much money is coming in, where it\u2019s going, and how much is left over for you. No nasty surprises.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Make smarter decisions.<\/strong> Want to hire an assistant, invest in new equipment, get extra training, or take a well-earned break? Your numbers tell you when you can afford it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avoid nasty cash flow jams.<\/strong> No more wondering if you have enough to cover rent or bills this month. Your accounting acts like a gentle stretch that prevents business cramps before they happen.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spot trouble early. <\/strong>Is your spending creeping up without you noticing? Supplies, training, subscriptions, it all adds up. Your accounting shows you the financial niggles before they turn into business injuries, like catching tight traps before they restrict your whole neck.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Save time and stress at tax time.<\/strong> When your books are in order, tax returns become a breeze not a panic attack. It\u2019s the difference between having clean towels, a warm bed, and all your cupping cups\/hot stones and other gear lined up and ready to go at the start of the day, and realising as your client arrives that you forgot to restock a bunch of stuff, and scrambling through cupboards to get it all while they\u2019re undressing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>DIY or outsource?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Should you DIY this stuff or leave it to the professionals? There are pros and cons to each path. I recommend a middle-of-the-road approach to maximise the pros and minimise the cons, where you do the day-to-day basic bookkeeping after some good quality training and practise, then use the professionals for oversight and for their more advanced Mad Skillz<sup>TM<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountants, and even some bookkeepers, can do <em>heaps<\/em> more for you and your business beyond doing your bookkeeping and filling out those tax forms. Who knew?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what they can do for your business once the bookkeeping and tax returns are done:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Tax<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategically structuring your income, expenses, and timing so you don\u2019t hand over more to the ATO than necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Virtual CFO (Chief Financial Officer)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is like having a finance boss in your back pocket without hiring a full-time employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>monitor your business performance regularly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>help you set financial goals and stick to them<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>run reports and interpret your numbers for decision making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>spot trends before they become problems (e.g. declining client retention or over-reliance on one income stream).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Structuring advice<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>An accountant can advise on whether you should stay a sole trader or move to a company or trust setup, weighing up risk, liability, admin cost, and tax implications so you don\u2019t get stung down the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a smart idea to talk to an accountant about what legal structure you should <strong><em>start<\/em> <\/strong>your business with, as it can sometimes be difficult to switch from sole trader to another structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Benchmarking<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They can compare your numbers against industry averages. This is great if you\u2019re wondering things like \u201cAm I charging enough?\u201d or \u201cWhy is my rent eating so much of my income?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Succession or exit planning<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ever want to sell your business, semi-retire or just stop one day, accountants can help you plan how to do that in a way that\u2019s financially sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, accountants can also do your day-to-day bookkeeping but, if you\u2019re not registered for GST and have an uncomplicated sole trader massage business, that\u2019s like going to town on a client with a Theragun when a hot pack and a night off would have easily sorted them out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So don\u2019t waste your accountant\u2019s time and your money on basic bookkeeping you can do yourself. Get some good training so you can do it right and not create a mess for whoever you outsource it to in future! Running a massage therapy business is already a full-body workout. The laundry alone is practically a part-time job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing: not doing your accounting is costing you more time than you think. Lost receipts, mystery transactions, tax panic, and wondering where all your money went is like ignoring that pile of laundry until it\u2019s a towel monster that eats your living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing your books regularly is also like doing 20 minutes of stretching after a long day. It feels like a chore when you\u2019re tired and just want wine and Netflix. And it doesn&#8217;t feel that big a deal to skip it this time, this week, this month. Until you wake up one day and it\u2019s a year (or nine) later and the towel monster has you in a jiu jitsu death grip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cAccounting is too complicated. I don\u2019t understand it.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your brain tends more right than left, accounting can feel like trying to massage your own back from the foetal position. But if you have a simple sole trader business and aren\u2019t registered for GST, it\u2019s actually <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> that complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s just that nobody ever bothered to explain it to you. Not your parents. Not your massage school. Not your accountant. Or they didn\u2019t explain it in a way you could <em>understand<\/em>: those accountants <em>do<\/em> be talking to clients as if the clients are accounting graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m happy to say I\u2019m not one of those accountants. When I was in Planet Office sorting out the accounting messes of large corporations, one of my co-workers from outside the Finance Department once said to me, \u201cYou\u2019re the only one from finance we want to talk to because you\u2019re the only one we can understand!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I\u2019d be more than happy to explain this stuff to you in plain English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cAccounting is boring. I\u2019d rather work on my clients than my books.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><em><br><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, of <em>course<\/em> you would! You\u2019re not <em>crazy<\/em>. Who amongst us <em>wouldn\u2019t<\/em> rather be doing <em>literally<\/em> anything than our accounting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even I can name at least 50 things I\u2019d rather be doing than my accounting \u2013 and I\u2019m an accountant. In fact, I once spent nine years <em>doing<\/em> the 50 other things instead of my accounting. Guess where that got me? Nine years behind on lodging my tax returns and a \u201cplease explain\u201d letter from the ATO when they finally noticed. It was a three-month, almost full-time job to sort that mess out \u2026 and that was <strong><em>with <\/em><\/strong>guidance from a registered tax agent. Not doing <em>that<\/em> again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s the thing: did you know that most small businesses fail? And the reason they fail, according to Michael E. Gerber in his legendary business book,<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/ia902800.us.archive.org\/21\/items\/TheEMythRevisitedMichaelE.Gerber\/The%20E-Myth%20Revisited%20-%20Michael%20E.%20Gerber.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The E-Myth Revisited<\/a><\/em>, is because most small business owners are technicians who are great at their craft but not trained in running a business. The \u201cE-Myth\u201d (Entrepreneurial Myth) is the false belief that being good at the technical work means you\u2019ll be good at building a business around it.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"540\" height=\"261\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.amt.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Post-001-07-E-Myth.jpg?resize=540%2C261&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image shows the cover of the book &quot;The E-Myth revisited&quot; Text says The Entrepreneurial Myth is the false belief that being good at technical work means you'll be good at buidling a business around it. \" class=\"wp-image-4046\" style=\"width:532px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.amt.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Post-001-07-E-Myth.jpg?w=540&amp;ssl=1 540w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/blog.amt.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Post-001-07-E-Myth.jpg?resize=300%2C145&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are five aspects of business \u2013 collectively called working <em>on<\/em> your business (while the technician part is called working <em>in<\/em> your business) \u2013 that you need to do in addition to your craft, to have a successful business:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Leadership \/ vision (entrepreneur role)<\/strong><br>Setting the direction of the business: where it&#8217;s going, why it exists, and what kind of business you actually want to build. It&#8217;s the big-picture thinking most therapists are too busy to do.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Management (manager role)<\/strong><br>Creating systems, processes, and routines to make the business run smoothly, so it\u2019s not chaos every time you get busy, hire someone, or take a day off.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Marketing<\/strong><br>Understanding who your ideal client is, how to attract them, and how to keep them coming back. This includes branding, messaging, and communication, not just ads and promos.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sales<\/strong><br>Turning interest into bookings. This is about how you talk about your services, build trust, and guide clients to say yes (without feeling icky about it). And finally, yep, you guessed it &#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Finance \/ money management<\/strong> Knowing your numbers so you can make decisions that aren\u2019t just based on vibes. This includes pricing, profit, budgeting, and yes, accounting.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Neglecting your accounting is like ignoring a persistent knot in your shoulder \u2014 it might not hurt right away but it will cause bigger problems down the track. Which just might see you become one of those small business failure statistics. And I don\u2019t love that for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI don\u2019t want to make mistakes and get in trouble.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s totally understandable when you don\u2019t know how to do something. That\u2019s why I recommend getting some training so you know the basics, then having a bit of professional oversight \u2013 a quick check every quarter if you\u2019re lodging a BAS return, once or twice a year if not \u2014 and leaving the more complicated stuff to an accountant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you\u2019ve tried to learn bookkeeping from YouTube, blog posts and bookkeeping courses that are designed for people who want to become a professional bookkeeper and you&#8217;re still no wiser, boy do I have a lovely surprise for you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>\u201cI just want to help people. &nbsp;I don\u2019t care about all that money stuff\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I get it. You didn\u2019t start your business because you\u2019re a greedy capitalist pig. You started it to help people and make a positive difference in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the thing: when your finances are messy or you\u2019re constantly stressed about money, it creates an energetic weight that\u2019s hard to shake. That kind of energy ripples out and your clients can sense it, even if they can\u2019t name it. And it can limit your business success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting on top of your accounting isn\u2019t about becoming obsessed with money; it\u2019s about clearing that energetic clutter so you can show up fully and confidently. When your financial life is organised and calm, you free up your energy to focus on what really matters: service. And that lets you help people more, and help more people.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Being on top of your accounting doesn\u2019t just help you<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you know your numbers, you\u2019re not just helping yourself. You\u2019re helping the whole massage community by being able to provide the data AMT needs to better support its members in its annual Workforce Survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The more AMT understands what it really costs to run a practice, the better it can fight for fairer policies, better funding, and support that actually fits how massage therapists work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What AMT could do with member financial data:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Set realistic industry benchmarks<\/strong><br>Members could compare their income, expenses, and profit margins to others in similar situations \u2013 solo vs multi-practitioner clinic, rural vs city, full-time vs part-time \u2013 and know whether they\u2019re doing okay or need to course correct.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fight for better conditions<\/strong><br>With real data, AMT could advocate more powerfully for fairer rates from NDIS or private health insurers, better small business support policies, or even inclusion in mental health frameworks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Develop targeted resources<\/strong><br>If the data shows a trend (e.g. lots of therapists undercharging or spending too much on supplies), they could create workshops, templates, or price guides to help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Promote massage as a viable career<\/strong><br>Clear, accurate income data helps fight the &#8220;you can\u2019t make a living doing massage&#8221; myth. That means more people choosing it as a long-term career and better public understanding of its value.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Help members grow and sustain their businesses<\/strong><br>When the association knows what their members are struggling with financially, they can support them in a much more meaningful way beyond CPD and compliance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re not just a business owner, you\u2019re part of a profession. When you keep good records, you give your association the power to see the whole picture: what\u2019s working, what\u2019s not, and what support massage therapists really need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One therapist doing their accounting might not seem like much but a whole community? That\u2019s powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Treat your business to a regular accounting massage<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like your clients benefit from consistent care, your business thrives when you regularly check in on the numbers that keep it alive and growing. Think of accounting as the gentle, attentive massage your business needs to stay pain-free, flexible, and thriving in a tough market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doing your own accounting isn\u2019t about geeking out on numbers.
