Living with COVID Massage Therapy Industry Survey

By Rebecca Barnett

We usually use AMT’s Instagram account to publish graphic stories featuring the evidence for massage therapy in managing various conditions. However, our current story is a little more grim, as it summarises the data collected from our recent short survey analysing the impacts of living with COVID on massage therapy businesses.

We surveyed members in January 2022 to assess the impact of living with COVID over the previous 2-month period.

The survey garnered 776 responses.

  • Three quarters of respondents said that their business was quieter since November 2021
  • 28% of respondents said that their business had declined by more than half
  • 47% of respondents said that times are tough but their business can weather the challenges
  • 37% of respondents do not think their business will survive without government support.

AMT is planning to support its members during this challenging period through:

  • instalment payments for membership renewals, on request
  • extension on upcoming first aid renewals, on request
  • 1 year police check renewal extensions across the entire membership
  • a schedule of AMT PD webinars that members can attend for no or little cost, depending on their circumstances, with the support of sponsorship by our preferred insurance provider, Fenton Green.

Stay tuned to your email for further details.

This is interesting, As a new therapist graduate as a cert 4 I late 2019 it’s Been hard to get anyone throught the door. 2020 I studied MLD , acupressure, Bowen, and Chapman therapy. Offering 10 people 4 free massages resulted in 2 people taking up the offer.

As for friends and family no one is interested other than my wife.

All I can say I’m glad I have s full time job that has not been impacted by Covid.

I’m hoping this year that the histeria that Covid has created will settle down so I can retire doing massage therapy 3 days a week well into my 70s.

  2. Great bio.
    Gotta love it.
    I laughed out real loud.

My business was chugging along I closed for Christmas then as Omicron hit I reopened mid January. I am not one to advertise and I have a good mature aged clientele and word of mouth and visitors to our region. My business now is virtually non existent

I have just updated my First aid , membership is paid till August, Insurance just paid not long ago, the Govt said on last day of July last year I have to work an extra 6 months longer before I retire, thankfully AMT is allowing another 12 months on police checks, this small expenditure savings is going to help as my business has not recovered to anywhere near precovid, I have enough CEU hrs to carry me through the year all gathered with very little expenditure, this week I had 5 appointment cancellations due to clients having covid. I am Grateful for the Govt assistance when needed.
So I will plod along looking forward to my new retirement date.

In theory I have retired from the workforce. I’ll be 80 next birthday. I enjoy massage, the social scene, It makes me feel relevant, it gives me a reason to get up in the mornings. I contract out to a clinic and since Covid arrived have not worked a single day, my age being the problem.

Rebecca, I like your new photo in the post, you look really happy, not like the old photo.
