A brilliant central hub pulses with digital energy, sending streams of data through crystalline pathways. Cool blue light radiates outward in a geometric pattern, connecting countless floating data points in a harmonious network. The minimal design creates a sense of organized complexity, while smooth transitions and ambient lighting give the scene a sophisticated, futuristic feel. Each connection point glows with purpose, forming part of a larger technological ecosystem.

Are we ready for a digital future?

In 2024, Allied Health Professions Australia and the Australian Digital Health Agency undertook a national survey to see how allied health professionals—including massage therapists—feel about using digital health tools like:

Provider Connect Australia™ (PCA™)
My Health Record
Electronic prescribing

The results are in, and guess what? Massage therapists showed up in a big way! Out of 2,419 respondents across 36 allied health professions, a whopping 485 were massage therapiststhat’s 20% of all responses! Given our profession’s size, we would have expected closer to 10%, so this shows just how engaged our community is in the future of digital health, even if many of us identify as “traditionalists” in the survey data.

So, what does this mean? AMT is working closely with Provider Connect Australia, plotting the path forward to shepherd AMT members into adoption of digital health products, including Health Practitioner Identifier numbers (HPI-I) issued by Medicare.

While this might sound pretty confusing at the moment, it’s actually an important step towards the holy grail of having a single provider number for health funds. It’s also a gigantic leap towards deeper integration and connectedness within the Australian health care system.

Not sure what Provider Connect or HPI-Is are? Don’t worry! Over the next few weeks, you’ll hear a lot more from us about what they mean for you. Plus, we’ll be inviting 20 members to join an exclusive pilot program to get hands-on experience with these tools.

Stay tuned for more details—check your emails next week!

Onwards and upwards.

  1. Will Medicare numbers be available for people like myself who didn’t get their provider numbers before the 2015 diploma course change?

    • Yes, you will still be able to apply for and receive an HPI-I. We hope to be able to do this as a bulk arrangement with Services Australia – just waiting on timing. But AMT members can apply independently any time. Might be worth being part of our pilot group!
